Embedding Library Resources in Canvas: Kanopy

This guide is designed for LAVC faculty interested in adding Library resources into their Canvas courses

What Is Kanopy?

Kanopy is a streaming educational video database with more than 26,000 films available. Kanopy offers award-winning collections including titles from PBS, BBC, Criterion Collection, Media Education Foundation and more. Note: users must register with Kanopy to stream content.

Adding Kanopy Content to Canvas

Kanopy must be accessed through Library's website or at (it is not currently available as an application inside of Canvas). Videos can be embedded inside of Canvas using the embed code generated by Kanopy. A few important things to know:

  • Off-campus access to Kanopy requires a UIA account. Students get these automatically, but faculty do not. If you haven't previously created a UIA account to access Library resources remotely, please email Meghan Cason.
  • Kanopy requires a separate login. Once you're inside the Kanopy platform, you will be prompted to create an account before you can stream a video. It's free for LAVC students and faculty, but separate from your UIA account (the latter is associated with the College). Even if you logged in with a UIA, you still need to log into Kanopy.
  • Once the video is live in your Canvas shell, viewers will still be required to login with a Kanopy account (though no UIA required at this point). Students will need to create this account before they can stream your video.

If you'd like to add a saved clip or playlist to Canvas, you'll need the unique embed code. Read the detailed instructions from Kanopy.
