OER: Open Educational Resources

OER Use At LAVC & Cost-Savings

How are OER & ZTC tracked?

We've done our best to track course sections using OER since LAVC was awarded the AB-798 grant in 2016. Prior to the addition of the ZTC icon in the schedule of classes in 2018, we relied on instructors to self-report OER use and adoptions. Since ZTC was implemented, we can more easily track which sections are zero cost; for instructors using OER to reduce cost for students (but are not ZTC), we can’t always track those sections unless they're reported to us. If you are teaching a section using OER that has resulted in cost-savings for your students, but is not included on the spreadsheet below, please report your course.

How are cost-savings calculated?

For efficiency's sake, LAVC has adopted the cost-savings calculation championed by Open Oregon, the Open Textbook Network, and other community college OER initiatives. That is, $100 in savings per student per course. ZTC courses are automatically added to this spreadsheet on a semester basis along with instructor-reported OER; the spreadsheet calculates the cost-savings based on enrollment. It's not a perfect system, but it helps account for variations in price by discipline, and there's a fair amount of research behind the $100 per student per course estimate
